Dr. Else E. Andretz, née Standhartinger, of East Lansing, Michigan, passed away peacefully on the afternoon of May 17, 2017 at the age of 88.

Else was born on April 30, 1929 in Augsburg, Germany and grew up in Deggendorf, Bavaria where she developed a deep love of languages. She married Sergey N. Andretz in 1948, and the couple happily made their home in America in 1952. Else obtained her PhD at Michigan State University and later combined her love of language and teaching to become a Language Specialist for the U.S....

Dr. Else E. Andretz, née Standhartinger, of East Lansing, Michigan, passed away peacefully on the afternoon of May 17, 2017 at the age of 88.

Else was born on April 30, 1929 in Augsburg, Germany and grew up in Deggendorf, Bavaria where she developed a deep love of languages. She married Sergey N. Andretz in 1948, and the couple happily made their home in America in 1952. Else obtained her PhD at Michigan State University and later combined her love of language and teaching to become a Language Specialist for the U.S. Department of Defense at the Defense Language Institute (DLI) located at the Presidio of Monterey, California. Else was well known for her hospitality, kindness, and love of people and creatures great and small. She took great joy in helping others opened her home and heart to many children that didn't have anywhere else to go. Else enjoyed reading, gardening, and cooking for friends and family.

Else is preceded in death by her husband, Sergey and her elder brother Erhard Standhartinger (Magdalena). She is survived by her siblings Ernst Standhartinger (Astrid), Erika Zöller (Toni), her sister-in-law Magdalena, her children Natalia "Natasha" Annanenko-Andretz, Alexandra "Sasha" Andretz, Nikolay "Kolya" Andretz (Julie), Pyotr "Peter" Andretz (Brenda), Lynn Shaw (Liz), her grandchildren Dimitri "Dima" Andretz, Stefan Gliwa (Mandee), Larissa "Lara" Myers (Mike), Nicholas Miller, Dustin Brown, Ashley Shillinger (Timothy), Ethan Andretz, Evan Shaw (Heidi), and many foster children, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and students who will forever remember her as "Mrs. A."
Else will be remembered as a woman with a large heart and great faith who was dedicated to family. She brightened the lives of everyone she met and she will be greatly missed.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, May 27, 11:00 a.m., at St. Andrew Orthodox Church 1216 Greencrest Ave, East Lansing, MI, 48823, with a reception to follow. Visitation will be held
Friday, May 26, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and Saturday, May 27, from 10:00-11:00 a.m.
