Age 97, formerly of Grand Rapids, passed away September 9, 2017.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Armitage and is survived by her daughter, Bobbie (Jim) Bates; her son, Bill (Patti) Armitage; grandchildren, Angie Farrell, Jennifer Velderman, Chris Armitage and Melissa Hong and six great-grandchildren.

Verna began her career at the age of 46 as a deputy in the Kent County Sheriff's Department. During her fourteen years as a policewoman, she became a noted public speaker. In 1969 she was appointed Chief Probation Officer of the 61st District Court where...

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Armitage and is survived by her daughter, Bobbie (Jim) Bates; her son, Bill (Patti) Armitage; grandchildren, Angie Farrell, Jennifer Velderman, Chris Armitage and Melissa Hong and six great-grandchildren.

Verna began her career at the age of 46 as a deputy in the Kent County Sheriff's Department. During her fourteen years as a policewoman, she became a noted public speaker. In 1969 she was appointed Chief Probation Officer of the 61st District Court where she developed a program for youthful offenders made up of 300 volunteers assisted by professional counselors. She also developed the first-in-the-nation probation program for handicapped offenders. During this time, Verna graduated from Aquinas College with a B.S. degree in Social Work. Verna was a leader in community organizations, including South Congregational Church Sunday School programs, York chapter O.E.S., Family Life Council of Kent County, Michigan Council of Family Relations, Women Police of Michigan, Keewano Council Campfire Girls and Grand Rapids Jaycee Auxiliary. In 1965 she was the first local recipient of the Law Day Liberty Bell Award.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, September 14, 2017, 3 p.m., Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 1730 East Grand River Avenue, East Lansing, MI. A memorial service will be held October 11, 11a.m. at East Congregational United Church of Christ in Grand Rapids, MI.
